Math 1b or 53

Hey guys I know this has been covered already but which math class should I take? I hear 1b is a weeder and to avoid it at all costs but on the chemical engineering page they advise not to skip it. What should I do?

You have to take 1B to take 53 if you have not taken AP Calc BC and received a 5 on your exam. If you’ve already got that 5, I would just take 53. Math 1B is not very relevant to 53 outside of basic calculus.

If you got a 5 on your BC calc, then straight to 53, absolutely.

You can try the old Math 1A and 1B exams to check your knowledge and see if you are ready for Math 53 or 54:

Note: Math 1B contains some introductory differential equations material, so you may have to self-study that before taking Math 54 if you skip Math 1B using AP credit. See the following:
