Math 1B or Math 53????

Hi... This is depending if I get a 5 on my AP Calc BC exam. But I already Passed out of AB from Junior Year so I can go into 1B if I wanted to. If I do get a 5 on BC, should I take 53 even though I might go Pre-Med? I Don't want to start my Calculus ALL over again because in some aspects, Calculus is fun and I want to continue, but maybe due to grades should I take 1b instead? Please Advise me.

You could take Math 53...but beware it's atrociously hard. Since you would know most of the 1B material, you could take 1B to pad your GPA...

From what I hear Math 1B is considered by many to be a weeder, which is to say that a disproportionate amount of lower grades are given. However, I've also heard someone who's taking it now say that it's not that bad and depends on the professor. I think generally, Math 53 has harder material but somewhat less harsh grading. I'm not too sure on this though.

How about Math 1A? If i'm taking math 1a, should i take math 1b after?

1B is a f'ing weeder; avoid it at all costs. I now know of at least two people who worked their butts off in that class and didn't pass. Both took AP Calculus too. Dead serious.

As an engineering student, I went straight into 53-54, so I have no idea how "bad" the 1 series is.

I've heard that the difficulty of 1A and 1B is overblown. They're required for a lot of majors and the classes are large, so naturally many people fail. I don't believe a disproportionate amount fail, though. That being said, I would still avoid taking any class you don't have to. It may not seem like it now, but in a couple years you'll wonder how the hell you're going to be able to take all the classes you want in your remaining semesters. Don't waste credits on a class you don't want or need.

I should also say that lower division math is not particularly interesting. Even if you like Calculus (like me), you will probably not find Math 53 interesting at all. Lower division math, from what I've experienced, is very formulaic and predictable. Pick up any standard Multivariable Calculus book or Linear Algebra book and read it cover to cover. That is about what Math 53 and Math 54 are like.

To theonlyone, if you don't have to take Math 1B and have no particular interest in it, then don't take it. My general recommendation is if you don't have to take a class AND don't want to take it (or even if you have some interest, but not a lot), don't take it. Take something else, something you must take, or something that sounds interesting. You'll be better off either way.

I heard from my friend, who has taken Math 1A - Math 54, that you should AP out of everything you can, especially Math 1B.

Thanks guys. I think I will take Math 53 if I get a 5 on AP Calc BC. But the thing is... how am I supposed to sign up for that at CalSo?

You'll receive instructions there. You'll also get to speak with your advisor, so no worries.

(I personally never went to CalSo, so I don't exactly know.)
