i'm going to be a frosh majoring in math. with the classes i've taken, i could go straight to upper division classes. would this be a good idea, or should i start from math 1b since i basically bsed all the math classes at my JC.

I've heard that Math 1B is really hard. Supposedly there are outrageously long integrals that you have to solve. Can anyone who has taken Math 1B confirm the difficulty of the class?

I am taking Math 1B right now, and all harsh grading and difficulty stories are true. You have been warned.

Im going to cal next year as a freshman pre-med majoring in pol sci. Since i am not required to take 1A and 1B for my major, do you think i should take those courses or take 16 A and 16B? I know the 16 series are easier, but do you think med schools would prefer the 1 series?

Since we are on the topic about math... after reading this, I'm not so sure about Math 1A.

Does anyone know how the Molecular Toxicology major? It says 16A or Math 1A for requirements. Do they mean you can do the 16 series or 1A and 1B or just only that single course of math (1A or 16A)? The info I found it at is...

It is under physical sciences and math requirements.

Thanks much!

1A is an easy A if you've done high school Calculus, so you'd be a fool not to take it. You need classes like that to take some of the pressure off.

Then if I get a 5 on BC, should i consider taking 1A but skip 1B?

if you're a non-MCB/Physical sciences Pre-Med, take Math 16A and Math 16B or Math 16A and Stat 2 (or 20).

if you're MCB, AP out of Math 1A/1B if you can. Maybe if you like calculus and you're confident about doing well, take Math 1A. Definitely try to skip Math 1B. Ideally, you'll take a semester of calculus at JC and a stats course at Berkeley to fulfill the 2 semesters of math required by many med schools

if you're physical sciences/engineering and you're a pre-med, you're obviously a masochist and you like pain. So just don your gimp-suit, put a red ball-gag in your mouth, and take Math 53/54 because it's required anyway.

Thanks abcdefg.....So im pretty sure that i am going to take 16A, but do you think that Stat 2 or Stat 20 would be easier than 16B? Which one would med schools prefer. Also, do you think that i should take calc at a JC this summer before i go to Cal or would med schools want me to take math at Cal?

Thanks a lot

stat 20 is a joke....and stat 2 is even more of a joke. But some med schools (like UCLA) require stats. Almost all the med schools that require 2 semesters of math will let you substitute one semester of stats for calculus. If you can, take your calc class at JC. The fact that you took all your science classes +stats at Berkeley will more than make up for it.

abcdefgclass2006, what's your major?

you pretty much pick ur classes at calso right?

so if i have no idea what to take right now, will i be alrite

yeah, i ditched Calso when i was in highschool....still got into the classes i wanted.

THe impression I got from Cal Day was that if you AP out of anything, definitely do not retake it.

I got the impression of something totally the opposite... They said that they recommend taht you take the class even though you get out of it... So... if i do get a 5 on the BC should I take Math 1A again to get a grade boost? or would it be just stupid. Did anyone do this before?

It takes a lot of time, but sure you can do it. Its probably part of the reason why Math at Berkeley is tough in the weeders, many students have taken it before.

M1st3rmarbl3s, I got the same impression. The MCB tourguide (GSI) told us not to use AP credits to get out of anything.

Do most engineering students take 1B at Cal or go straight into 53/54?

Well mostly I heard that Cal makes Math 1B way harder than it should be, and if you can get out of it you should and skip to 53.
