Math 1B

Is Math 1B as hard as it's hyped up to be? Any advice for doing well?

Do the homework, ask questions if you have any, and DO NOT FALL BEHIND. If you're good at math, then 1B shouldn't be a problem. In fact, if you're good enough at math, I'd recommend skipping it altogether and moving on to 53 or something else. I think the course is made much harder than it actually needs to be and it's definitely one of the biggest weeder courses, especially for science majors. I'm retaking math1B in summer session right now. Class survey on the first day showed that 20/35 students in the class were retaking math1B because they had not passed previously. It all depends on how good you are at math. If you can skip it, please do.

Math 1B is definitly known to be one of the bigger weeder courses at Cal. But how hard it is really depends on what professor you have. You'd be surprised by how a professor can make easy material seem ridiculously difficult. (like the prof I had for math 1A) And of course to make matters worse, math 1b is usually filled with very competitive pre-meds (who are known to be very cuthroat) and to a somewhat lesser degree engineering majors, which means the curve in the class probably won't be in your favor. But most of them take it 2nd semester, not the first, so it shouldn't be too bad in the fall.

Any advice on which profs to take for Math 1A?

Borcherds. A tad boring, but exams are fairly easy. However, that leaves no margin for screwing up because everybody else will do well on the exams too.

op_city, which prof did you have for math 1a?

Professor AK Liu. Look him up on ratemyprofessors. com: http://ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=322328

He's not teaching math 1a this year I believe so if you want to take that class, you don't have to worry.

im taking haiman. it said he was good on ratemyprofessor. anyone know anything about him?
