Okay, I'm starting at UCB in the fall. I got a 5 on the Calc AB AP test. I'm not a huge fan of math, but I'm fairly good at it. I doubt I'll go into a math related field or major, but I'd rather not rule it out entirely. Should I be taking Math 1B or is it really ridiculously difficult?

same thing here except either the 1A 1B series or 16A 16B are required prereqs for me. I called advising, and they said calculas is taught way differently at UCB than in AP Calc so they wanted me to retake calc 1 (1A). Now I'm conflicted >.>

If you recieved a 5 on the AP test, you should probably go into Math 1b. I mean you did not pay 90+ dollars and study hard for your 5 just to repeat the course. Besides, it's never a bad idea to be a little ahead.

hey purple cow are you a UCB student already? do you know if math 1B involves doing lots of proofs? thanks.

no, i've taken 1b and there aren't a lot of proofs. I had Hald, and there is an oral exam in which you show the steps of one of 10 theories, and have to write down all the steps, which was a *****. I don't know if they do that in other classes. But other than that, there weren't really any proofs in HW or exams.

hmm now I really don't know which one I should take anymore >.> thanks for the info though

I would say if you can skip a math class do it.. even if you don't feel like you're super prepared.. unless of course you need to start with 1A for med school or something. I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB and went straight to 1B. And most of the people I met in that class were as nervous and seemingly "unprepared" as I was.. I remember the night after our first 1B lecture, a group of us were in the lounge freakin out about the quiz that was coming up in the week.. Haha, we were so naive then.. And we all turned out fine at the end of the semester.. I can vouch for the people who ace the Calc BC test and jump straight to Math 53 as well.. Most feel nervous about skipping ahead, but most turn out fine.
