I'm a human biology major, premed, signed up for Chem 6AH and Math 10B for fall quarter. I got a 5 on the Calc AB exam and a 5 on the Chem AP exam. I signed up for Math 10B because it's easier, but I just checked the prereqs again, and saw that Math 20B is a prereq for Chem 6CH. One of the Muir advisers suggested asking the Chem department to waive the prereq.

I was wondering if Math 10B really is a prereq for Chem 6CH. Do you really need Math 10B for Chem 6CH?

Thanks!

Math 10B and 20B follow generally the same curriculum, but 20B goes into much more depth, at a much faster pace and series are covered as well (which aren’t covered in 10B). The level of Calculus is much more difficult in the 20 series than the 10 series. I’d say the AP Calculus you took in high school is probably more similar to that of the 10 series, but perhaps with a bit more difficulty, but definitely not up to par with the 20 series.

I don’t know anybody personally that stayed in the Chem 6 Honors sequence all three quarters, so I can’t vouch for 6CH, but I heard that you do use Calculus to varying degrees in the honors series, but I’m unsure of the extent. Pre-reqs are typically set forth to ensure that students will have all the abilities and skills needed to do well in the course, and if the counselor waives the pre-req, be prepared to teach yourself some material that’s learned in 20B that you won’t have learned in 10B.

You might as well just take the 20 series; if you’re willing to work as hard as you’re going to have to for the 6H series, might as well take the harder math series, too.

It depends who is teaching chem 6CH. If its Hoeger, you won’t need any calculus. If its any other professor I don’t know.
