So I've heard from a lot of people that if you need to take both math 20d and f courses for your major, it's better to take F first because it can help you with D, but I've also heard that it doesn't matter. I'm planning on taking one or the other next quarter, and then the other in fall of 2011.

From someone who's been in both, what would you suggest?

I took F before D, and I remember it helped for one chapter in D. I didn’t have to pay attention for a few weeks because I already learned that material in F.

i say u take F before D, unless all the teachers for F suck and the ones for D are good for this quarter. 20F is supposedly easiest of the series, other than 20C (i got a+ in the class :)). ive never taken 20F before, but if i had to, i would take F then D.

20F was definitely the easiest between 20CDEF for me. It’s probably the least rigorous of the DEF series, has a good intro to MATLAB (20D has a faster learning curve), and a little bit of D (as Physalis mentioned) covers some material from F (I think it was eigendecomposition? – it’s been 4 years so don’t remember). Less hard science/engineering majors are in 20F (since I know at least Management Science takes 20F and NOT 20D), so the grading scheme was a joke.

I took math 20D before F. I had Shirazi as my professor and he spent so much time going over matrices and eigenvalues/vectors that I didn’t have to study that much for 20F. Ultimately, either class is going to help you with the other.

I have to decide as well for next quarter between these two classes and the decision will come down to the professors.

20D is taught by either John Helton or Mor Mia Minnes Kemp.

20F is taught by either Bo Li or Hans Wenzl.

Does anyone have experience with these teachers and can offer an opinon? (I did check ratemyprofessor btw, but I figure this place is better to have a discussion about it than there).
