Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone had any input on either of these classes, or which of them may be "easier" for someone who struggled on formula memorization during Calc I and II.

Also, I can't find the thread, but I recall reading that some of the classes that are already full will have spaces opened up for transfer students during orientation, is this true? I would like to enroll in Film 20A, but it's full already.

Thanks so much in advance!

Math 22 is definitely the easier of the two. Math 23A is more for engineers/math majors/etc. Only some classes open up seats during orientation, so you kinda gotta guess.

I’d definitely second Midnight’s recommendation. I only have anecdotes as reference, but most of friends were more successful in Math 22.

What’s your major?

Thanks guys!

My primary major is Business Management Economics, although I have some interest in Computer Science, which requires Math 23A.

Yeah, most econ majors just take the econ calc route (only 2 classes). If you’re interested in other majors, the econ calc series doesn’t really count for the math requirements. The engineering series (19A/B, 23A/B) is way more difficult but I think it was the most rewarding because I think I’ve gotten a solid foundation in calc now.

Math 22 is pretty basic multivariable calc, but many students find it difficult because they aren’t used to the concepts.

Thanks MidnightGolfer. I ended up enrolling in Math 22 at orientation. A bit nervous of how difficult it will be still, but I have credits for Math 11A, 11B, 19A, 19B transferring over from my CC, so hopefully that all helps me out.

You should also check with your department advisors or the course catalog to double check with choosing math 23A or math 22. Some classes require only 23A and not 22, while other require 23A or 22.

What class do you need math 23A or math 22 for?

Math 22 will definitely work for your interest in Business Management Economics, but I believe Comp Sci requires Math 23A. You might want to check with a major advisor whether they will allow it. Sometimes they won’t list that they allow it, but it will show as an option on your degree checklist on your MyUCSC portal (once you officially declare).
