I just received an email saying that I should consider taking the honors version of Calc 3. I'm an incoming freshman and I'm wondering what the advantages are to taking it. In high school it was so that colleges saw u were taking tough classes but if there isn't any advantage other than the title should I still do it?

Good question, I received the email myself. Anyone?

I got the same email last semester, and didn’t do it. I wouldn’t unless you either a) love calculus and want a more in depth understanding or b) for some reason want a more challenging courseload

I’d check the course out, but confirm with your advisor that you can drop to a regular 241 class before the 10th day (the day your schedule is pretty much set in stone), if you feel that it’s too much. You wouldn’t have gotten the email, if they didn’t think you’d be able to handle it.

Well the only metric used by uiuc to determine whether you can handle it is an ap calc exam score. you need a 5 on the BC exam, which isn’t that hard to get IMO so definitely don’t go in thinking it will be easy

I think you should do it, as long as you’re confident that you can get a decent grade in the class. I’m taking it for sure.
