Is there an appreciable number of people who choose to retake Math 31A even though they have satisfied the prereqs for taking 32A or 31B? Or is it a small minority, of which pretty much everyone who gets a score of 5 on Calc BC takes 32A? I slacked off too much in senior year and I need a stronger foundation...and I want to take the class that's right for me.

if you got a 5 on BC, you must take 32A. its the 5s in AB and the 4s in BC that might go back and take 31A if they don't think they have a good foundation. how many of them do? who knows, unless someone's actually done a statistical analysis at some point.

Why is that those students who earned a 5 on the BC exam MUST take 32A?

I have the same question because I just had my orientation as a math/econ major and a 5 on the BC exam. I feel like I could have done a lot better and wanted to enroll in 31B, but my orientation counselor said I couldn't.

A friend of mine had the same criteria, but she is in the engineering program, and her departmental counselor said she could enroll in 31B for refreshment. Was her case different than mine because she is in engineering?

i dont think you have to, its your option

huh. that's interesting, about the departmental counselor and your friend.

from glancing at the Math dept site (and some quick reasoning), a 5 on AB/4 on BC means you have credit for 31A, but you can still "retake" 31A at UCLA. a 5 on BC means you have credit for 31A and 31B, so you can "retake" 31B (but not 31A since you have credit for the class after it).

so basically, yeah you can probably take 31B with a 5 on BC, and no there probably aren't a lot of people who do since orientation counselors always say you can't.

So would it be bad if I just changed my math class to 31B then?

negative

10char

if you got a 5 on AB and BC, you have to take 32A or 3C. that's just how it is, unfortunately.

if you get a 3-4, though, you have the option of taking the courses over again, but not with a 5.

^^^ That's not true. A 5 on AB only gets you out of 31A, but not 31B.

but if you can don't retake since the earlier you are done with math series the better, especially engineers since we have to take 4 classes every quarter, if you are done with math early you can do 3 a quarter which is a whole lot easier

i said 5 on AB and BC...not just AB (actually just a 5 on BC would suffice)

i just went to orientation. a buncha kids had 5's on AB and BC, and they HAD to start off at 3C or 32A. whats funny is that most of them were premed lol

i was in this boat too, but luckily i took community college courses instead of AP classes, so i was able to start in 32A, but only have to do one quarter to get a year's worth of math to satisfy low div reqs and pre med reqs

That's odd, I just came back from orientation as well (Session 103) and my counselor said that a 5 on AB only gets you out of 31A, but not 31B. A 5 on BC does get your out of both 31A and B.

lol i think youre just confused on my wording...

i never said a 5 on AB gets you out of both 31A and 31B...i said you need BOTH a 5 on AB and a 5 on BC to get out of both (or just a 5 on BC).

sorry about that.

Oh, haha yeah I think I was confusing what you said. That makes sense then.

a 5 on both doesn't mean anything. only the 5 on BC matters. a 5 on BC gives you course credit for BOTH 31A and 31B, so the credit you got for 31A from getting a 5 on AB is irrelevant.

Damn, I'm getting mixed messages...

you got a 5 on BC, so you can't take 31A or 31B. that is all.

no if you got 5 on BC you can't take 31A but can take 31B or just go straight into 32A (which i recommend)

if ursa does allow you to enroll in 31A, at the end of the quarter you will probably see a notation next to your grade referencing some sort of "advanced standing" and you will most likely not recieve any gpa or unit credit for the class
