I've enrolled in Math 41 for this fall, but got a 5 on Calc AB. So I looked through the Duke forum here and the course synopses online... I've decided that I can't take 32L because I cannot fit it into my schedule, don't want a third lab-related class, and because the general feeling was that students found the labs monotonous. Math 32 and Math 41 use the same textbook, have the same final, and are calculator-free. The Math 32 class I'm looking at still has 10 places available, but I'm not sure if I should sign up. I could wait until orientation to decide, but I'm not sure. Any opinion?

I did the same thing. I got a 5 on AP Calc AB, but enrolled in Math 41 anyways. I'm just not positive that I'll be able to remember everything from Calc 1, and I've read on CC that Math 32 is the most failed class at Duke. I'd rather have the review, and Hodel is supposed to be a fabulous teacher.

Same here. I got a 6 on the IB Math Methods SL test and decided to do 41 over 31 and 32. I felt 41 will be a good step forward with a bit of review. Also, Hodel is supposed to be a great teacher.

Math 41 is a great way to get calc out of the way...you'll spend a week or so briefly reviewing derivation, and then on to the Math 32 curriculum, minus the time for a lab. Calc at Duke is no joke - both are strictly curved (yep, 12 A's out of 70 students, Hodel's two sections). She's great (and so is her husband), and she is more than willing to answer any question you might have. I definitely recommend taking it if you've had a decent calculus experience in high school. She also teaches 103, for future reference...

I do want to mention that I was told about this "most-failed-class-at-Duke" business as a 32 TA. We were instructed to relay to concerned students that while this was (numerically, but perhaps not percentage-wise) true, the "most-failed" class translated to something considerably less than one percent of our students.

thanks for your replies
