Math 32a with CHAYES, L

Is he really as bad as people say he is? Should I just wait 2nd quarter to take Math 32a then? I am currently an incoming freshman and have no idea what to do after reading his reviews?

He assigns difficult problems, but difficult does not equal bad professor. He has tricky exams (hole in shape when computing line integral for 32B if I remember).

Don't wait a quarter to take 32A. I recommend the professors teaching 32B in the winter.

Oh I see. So it's do able? After reading the revies on bruinwalk it makes it seem like he is impossible. This quarter I will have chem 20a math 32a and GE Cluster Cosmos, does the schedule look good ?

I had him for 32B, and he is one of my favorite professors. He's a bit off the beaten path, but nice if you get to know him. Definitely go to office hours. It'll be a large class so try and make sure you utilize your discussion sections and ask him questions. His questions are full of tricks, but they will be things you may have seen already in previous homeworks, with maybe one or two new things. He has taught 32A a lot, so he will definitely do a good job if you break through his bostonian accent and other eccentrities.

double post i know, but I got a B+ in his class. My best math grade at UCLA - (somehow, college killed me in math)

Haha, don't worry Deuces, if no solutions manual existed and if you tried harder, your grade would be different.

I really think that slackers would be weeded out if the solutions manual was never circulated. Same with lab reports.

tru dat BH, i did really well in my summer class of differential EQ's. I spent a lot of time on other classes this year (physics, chem) and didn't worry as much about math. The crutch that is a solution guide was my murderer/ess. I hate those things so much, I mean they're nice... but too nice. Lab reports I tried to do with my own brain power. Need to learn the whole time management deal

Chayes is hit or miss in terms of likability, just like the rest of the professors at UCLA. My roommate absolutely hated Chayes and claims she lost all her love of math after his 32A class, though she might be exaggerating. If you're worried about it, try out his class for a week then drop if you don't like his style.

I personally liked Rogawski for 32A. He's a very straightforward teacher and knows how to explain things clearly; too bad he was one of the first 32A classes to get filled up.

I feel that people hate a class (subject) more than they hate a teacher, though their conscious' don't say so.

Yes, there are cases when people hate a certain subject because they claim the professor sucks ...

but from what I observe from people, they hate a class because there's a lot of homework or because it's difficult ..

hey, so I have Chayes for 32A in the fall, but when I log onto the ucla book store to see what books I need it says my teacher is Staff. Blame it on a simple glitch??

Confirm that your lecture was at 1-1:50. If it is, then it's just a minor issue with the textbooks web.

yeah, just a minor glitch i suppose, thanks.
