Math 3A instead of Math 31A? Oops, uh oh?

So first quarter I took Math 1, Chem14A, and GE Cluster 60A. I kinda don't want to do science anymore so I decided to take a Poli Sci class Winter Quarter to see how I like it.

Anyways, Winter Quarter I enrolled in Math 3A, Poli Sci 40, History 13B. I was thinking about going into Poli Sci, and if I do, I also considered working for the Accounting Minor. The Accounting Minor says Math 3A and Math3B can be substituted for Math31A and 31B. However, the minor is extremely competitive and I need a 3.2+ in my prereqs for the minor in order to get in. I'm afraid if I don't get into the minor, then the prereq classes I took for the Accounting minor would have been wasted. Which is why I also thought about double majoring in Biz/Econ and Poli Sci or just Econ and Poli Sci.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I thought that if I take the 31 series, I'd have more open options for me since I wouldn't be limited to the Accounting Minor, and in the event I don't get in, I could always double major. However, the drawback of it all was that I kinda enrolled in Math 3A already :( And I believe Math31A is a LOT harder than Math3A? Advice anyone? T-T

3 series is for chumps.

@aa6590: uhhh... no it's not.. it's just usually for non-engineers. >.<

31 series is a joke...anything single variable is a joke compared to multivariable.

I switched my intended field of study, so I ended up taking both. So you are right, if you aren't sure what you are going into, the 31 series will offer more flexibility. Contrary to popular belief, the 31 series is NOT harder than the 3 series. I don't know where people get that from. The 31 series may even be more straightforward...

Um...oh crap then? Lol! Math31A and Math3A are already filled Winter Quarter. Am I doomed? I can't take Math31A this quarter then :(

Does this mean I might have to take Math3A winter and then take Math31A spring? What a waste :( Anything I can do?

And what's the difference between UCLA's Biz Econ and regular Econ?

since when is 3.2+ extremely competitive....?

I'm just worried I won't get a 3.2+ GPA in my Accounting Minor prereqs, and then I won't get accepted into the Minor, and then I just wasted my time taking those classes :(

You could take something besides math Winter and take 31A Spring. There's no sense in taking both if you don't have to.

Math31A is not offered in the Spring. I also found out about the Statistics Minor. It also accepts Math3B and doesn't have the strict GPA requirement as Accounting does. I suppose if I don't get into Accounting I can get the Stats minor? =</p>

if the minor allows math3a and math3b, i'm sure many people are taking the 3 series instead of the 31 series. just do well in the 3 series and have a better than average GPA (maybe 3.5+) and you should be fine.

if you ask me, i would say stay in math3a for winter quarter and take 3b in spring quarter. seriously, if the minor allows it just do it. i don't think they would allow 3 series to be substituted for 31 series if you were at a disadvantage.

"I'm afraid if I don't get into the minor, then the prereq classes I took for the Accounting minor would have been wasted...
Are you going for the accounting minor just for the sake of having a minor? You know that you can enroll in the mgmt classes even if you aren't in the accounting minor, right? So you don't "have to" get into the minor, and the prereqs you took wouldn't have been "wasted". Anyway, it's not difficult getting 3.2+ in the prereq classes, really...

"And what's the difference between UCLA's Biz Econ and regular Econ?"

To be honest, not much. The major requirements for bizecon are stricter as to which type of classes you have to take (ie, aside from 101/102/103, four have to be mgmt, 2 have to be from the 106 series, etc), whereas for econ, it's just 101, 102, and 7 upper div classes of whatever you want from the dept. The difference between the two is nothing to lose sleep over.

"if the minor allows math3a and math3b, i'm sure many people are taking the 3 series instead of the 31 series. just do well in the 3 series and have a better than average GPA (maybe 3.5+) and you should be fine."

Not sure about that... seems like most people in the accounting minor are also bizecon majors (not saying all of them... but most). So most probably took the 31 series. To the op - the 31 series is not harder than the 3 series. Find an easy, straightforward professor and you will be fine. I had Miech and ended up getting good grades in calc, even though math is like my worst nightmare and my achilles heel.

"Math31A and Math3A are already filled Winter Quarter. Am I doomed? I can't take Math31A this quarter then "

Lots of people drop out, so you may get in if you keep a watch on the schedule of classes until a few days into the quarter. If you don't get in, maybe you can try taking the equivalent at a community college during the summer?
