I had a quick question-are these the same class? I was wonderin whether i would get credit if i took both of them (not in the same quarter). Reason being: i need one year of math for some grad programs, i would hate to have to take 32B.

i'm pretty sure you cant jump between the series like that. definitely not from 31/32 series down to 3 series (just like you cant jump from chem 20/30 series to 14 series). i believe the material isnt the same at all. 32A is more just straight math for math's sake. 3C is more applied math and a bit of statistics.

You cannot take the 3 series and the 31 series together like that. You must take one or the other. If you take 31A you must take 31B. Or you can take 3A and 3B. The two classes are roughly the same except I believe the 3 series is geared more for life sciences majors but don't take my word for that.

yeah you're right

Sorry to dig up this old thead, but I'm having a dilemma of either taking 32a or 3c. Reason is that I'm thinking pre-med (I'm psychobio), so GPA is obviously something I dont wanna screw up (which I already did in Math 31b by getting a C+).

I talked to the professors and counselors and math department and they all said that it was up to me. Obviously, the math department wants me to do the 30 series and finish with it, but they said that I could do 3c if i wanted to.

So...if I don't even have to do the 30 series, should i just go to 3c? Is stats/probability a lot easier than multivariable calculus? I know people say that 32a is slightly easier or similar to 31b. Would I miss anything important in 3b because I didnt take it? Thanks for the help.

it seems a little extreme to be changing a series just based on a grade of a C+, it's ucla, sooner or later your gonna have to face the music

i think you can take 3c then take 32a in the following quarter. i know of someone who did this.

3c is just probability while 32a is multivariable. if anything, 32a slightly resembles 3b in that 3b does go over a little bit of multivariable

why did they do 3c AND do 32a? Doesn't one count in place of another?

So you guys are saying that I should stick it out for one more quarter? Or that 3c really isn't that much easier...

hey guys,
i actually did that this quarter and I'm taking 3C. I'm planning to major in bio and i emailed the counselor. They said it was fine as long as I wasnt planning on majoring in math or business or something like that. So I dont think its a big deal.

I went from 31B to 3C this quarter. It is fine for me since I am a bio major.

omg do NOT take 32A if you don't need it. ive heard horror stories. 3C is much more gpa (premed) friendly.

well, other than stats what other options do you have?

hey guys, thx for the advice. I think im gonna stick with 3c since I'll be using some of the stats stuff in Psych 100A...I would assume...

And even though I know a LOT of people in my 32A class...theyre all really good at math and I'll have to compete with them for the grades. Yea, i know that ill have to deal with this, but I couldn't find a use for the 32A class as pre-med...maybe for physics?
