As an USAMO-er, I will not be taking this class.

Haha, nope. Sign me up for 21.

The final exam is a take-home problem set that is due in 55 hours. One of my friends who is taking the course didn’t sleep.

um, ew, no.

It sounds amazing but I’m probably not smart enough O.o

Plus the whole getting into Harvard is an issue :P

One of my friends in the class lost his phone because he hadn’t had time to use it in 3 weeks and forgot where he left it. He also lost 10 pounds during that time because he didn’t have time to eat.

:p

i wanted to take math 55 but after hearing horror stories, assuming too that i will get accepted, i will probably take math 21

for you guys here, why take math 55? are you going to concentrate in math at harvard?

[Math 55 student gets laid, considered for Fields Medal](http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~satirev/old/vol1no2-math.html)

this is hella funny about math 55 students

Probably not, but I want to surpass my limits.

“problem sets can take anywhere from 24 to 60 hours to complete”
LOL nope.

FYI - Your choices aren’t just 55 or 21. Math 23 and 25 are also first year options - both are proof-based, but far less rigorous than 55.

Even though i’ve done USAMO for the past 3 years Math 55 still scares the bejesus out of me… If I were accepted I’d probably wimp out and do math 25…

TheYankInLondon, where are you from fellow USAMO-er? I’m also not going to take this class.

^ I’m from Massachusetts.

I took the USAMO 2x so far, and I would love to challenge myself by taking Math 55. Hope I get into Harvard :D

Everyone I’ve known who has gone to Harvard quit math. I’m pretty horrible at math and I procrastinate like mad, so probs not. Multivariable calc was difficult enough. 55 sounds terrifying.

the thing is, is it worth spending the majority of your time studying just for a single class? its hella demanding. as first, i wanted to take it because of the challenge and the prestige of such course, but i changed my mind after talking to a friend of mine who took the course. she took math 55 and she barely had any time to study for her other classes.

On the one hand, I would like to convince myself I could manage in this course, although maths isn’t my forte. On the other hand: Hahahaha. I would fail miserably.

I was thinking though, the people who take Maths 55 do not have any time to participate in any extra-curriculars, make friends, do well in other classes, take freshmen seminars…
Unless you plan to go into mathematical research/academia I wonder how benificial it would be to take this course!

homework takes 24 to 60 hours to complete

i mean seriously? i wanna have time to go to starbucks.

i wanna sip my latte and contemplate about life. and i want to experience the boston-cambridge night life. i wont let math 55 take those away from me

^ agree

Even if I was good enough, and who knows if I am, I don’t want to sacrifice my life to one course.
