math a factor when applying to schools as a bme/bio e major?

anyway, while trying to decide to what school to apply to, i had a tough time deciding between schools of engineering and college of arts and sciences for various schools. yes i have a strong interest in bio e (or related fields); however, i was worried that my math grades, which are quite poor (3.00 gpa w/ most rigorious math possible, but a 3.9 without math freshman-junior, and likely 3.92 counting 1st sem senior year) would be a factor when i apply to schools of engineering as a Bio, or even Chem related major (no intention of doing civil e, mech e, or ee even though my physics is quite good). I have 5s in all the 6 aps i took (5 in calc bc/ab subscore as well) in addition to 800 in Math IIC and a 780 in SAT I math, o and a 750 in Bio M, which happens to be the lowest score of my 5 Sat iis. so yea, will my crappy math scores in an uber competitive public school kill my chances at say duke's pratt, penn engineering, or jhu bme? cuz if it did...i'll feel ineffably stupid

o, and any thoughts on what adcoms will do when i explain my single C in precalc was in part a result of a family crisis?

They will in fact care about your math performance. BME/BE/ChemE all require plenty of math.

You have other good math credentials, which will help.

I do not think that your math grades will kill you, though they certainly won't help. It sounds like you have a B average in math, with an outlier low grade due to a family crisis (and admins aren't heartless; at top schools where they have time to look at an app holistically, they will take this into account). That's only a little lower than my high school math GPA was (I had As in AP stats and Bs in all other math classes) at a competitive public school and I got into JHU BME...also into MIT, where I ended up going.
