Math achievement and MIT admissions

I've heard mixed reviews on this and people say that it doesn't really matter if you're GREAT at Math, as long as you can get an 800 on SAT and SAT IIc math and everything else is fine then you're application will be considered through personality traits and INTELLECTUAL CURIOUSITY and ACADEMIC INTERESTS?

what's the psychology behind this? the fact that anyone who can get an 800 on Math IIC is smart enough to later come to MIT and pursue higher math etc.?

how true is this? does amc score REALLY matter?

Uhhh...........

Intellectual curiousity, interests, and personal traits > everything else

As long as your in range your fine.

I don't think your AMC/AIME score will ever hurt you, no matter what it is. Not everybody in the MIT applicant pool has taken those tests, so taking them can only help you.

I would also point out that the admissions officers have said many times that anything above a 700 in SAT form (I or II) is considered the same as an 800.

WHAT??

Can I hear a real MiT adcom say this?

as opposed to all the pretend ones answering emails and blogging and selecting the freshman class and stuff?

Ben Jones has made similar statements several times. One instance I found in a quick search of his admissions blog is here:

Which is more important in consideration for admission?"

I wouldn't say that one is more important than the other, but since you have a 710 on your SATII (which is a totally fine score) I would try to get your SATI Math over 700 as well if you can. There is no need to retake the SATII.

Haha, I understand the reluctance to take this sort of thing on faith from some faceless person on an internet message board, but believe me, I have heard a real MIT admissions officer say this. In person, too. In fact, he made me late to cook dinner. ;)
