Daughter has taken ACT twice. Received composite 33 both times, with score breakdown for each test date below:
Math: 28/28
Science: 33/36
Reading: 36/34
English 34/35
She would like to take the test one more time, in order to perhaps bring up her math score to more evenly match her other scores. Any tips for how to specifically study for the math portion?
Do you know why she got 28? not enough time or not knowing the content?
I am not entirely sure—I don’t think time was the issue, and she worked with a tutor prior to the test.
You need to look at what she missed and study that type question(s). If you don’t have access to that data, take a practice test. Is she finishing math on time?
Math is best practiced by working problems until you understand the concepts.
Some people just don’t test great even if they know the material. There is a young man in my daughters calculus class he gets made fun(jokingly) because he did poorly on the ACT and SAT, but is the smartest kid in the school in math just not fast.
He says he reads slow. My daughter says he will say “Just calm down wait a second I’ll have the answer it takes me a bit!” He always gets it right.
The speed of the ACT 1 min per question is just too fast its just the way it is.
Practice. Practice. Practice. Math is not my strong suit, but I greatly improved my SAT math with diligent practice over a wide variety of topics. Unfortunately simultaneously I slacked on improving my english to where I wanted so I have to retake XD
@Libby1901 ask the tutor to find out her weaknesses… or go to CRACK ACT to get some past ACTs for your DD to do under timed condition to find out her weaknesses
Practice! I was making 27s on practice tests and then I went through almost the entire big red book the ACT sells. My score on my first test (the scores came out this morning): a 32 on math and a 34 overall, and I’m not a big math person. I prefer the humanities.
