Hi, I'm thinking of transferring to NYU's CAS and seeking a degree in math and music. This is because I'm seeking to pursue music composition/performance, but my parents want me to have a good academic backing as well. I'm coming in with many math transfer credits. Is this a good plan? How opportune is a dual degree in math and music at CAS? Thanks.

I told my daughter, if she applied to NYU Steinhart for vocal performance, I wanted her to have an academic minor. Problem is, if one auditioned and didn’t make it…they couldn’t go to NYU at all. So she flopped and applied to CAS (for a still not firm major), with a possible minor in music. THing is, know that the music will NOT be “performance” . You will take things like history and theory, but NOT be able to get a “conservatory” type music major. I’m too lazy right now to go back and locate where I found that. Somewhere on the website or forums. Just too many classes required to major, or I think even minor in music education or performance.

But I’d LOVE for someone to correct me if this isn’t right because my daughter would love to accomplish the same thing.

Yeah I am not majoring in music, however, I am doing a similar “odd” major in Mathematics and MEIS. I think in regards to your question, it might be difficult to double major if both classes take a very heavy courseload. I know for a fact, mathematics at Courant is very difficult, and has one of the toughest courseloads. ( This is naturally the case at many colleges and universities) So if you know that music has a lot of requirements, I would discourage you to pursue that route. Personally, I know Middle Eastern Studies would be a major I could significantly complete.
