Math at Bryn Mawr

Any comments on the math program?

I am a junior math major at Bryn Mawr and I would be happy to talk to you about my experience!

The department is very supportive of each and every student who chooses to study in math. That means giving weaker students all of the resources they need to succeed, and challenging the stronger students to achieve the best they can. The department has an amazing track record getting students into graduate school! Just last year two of the graduating seniors won prestigious national fellowships. One received a Churchill fellowship to study math at Cambridge, and the other is now studying statistics at John Hopkins on an NSF fellowship.

I really appreciate the close-knit community at Bryn Mawr. The professors make themselves very accessible and I have the feeling that they take a personal interest in my academic success. They catch me in the hallway to tell me about new opportunities, have helped me find off campus summer positions and invited me over to their house to chat about math over pizza. The entire department knows me by name although I have never taken a class with most professors.

Bryn Mawr offers all of the “standard” math classes up through the first-year graduate level. That’s more than one could expect from a college our size, and even better, we also have the option to take more exotic classes at the University of Pennsylvania. I have immensely enjoyed my classes at Penn and got a summer research position with one of my Penn professors as a result - which is funded by a summer research grant from Bryn Mawr. Bryn Mawr has quite a bit of funding for students to pursue unpaid internships and research experiences off-campus.

I had a fair bit of reservations about studying math at a women’s college but I am so glad that I made the decision to come to Bryn Mawr. I have already achieved more than I ever imagined possible and I still have two-and-a-half semesters (and a summer) to go!

Please let me know if you have any questions!
