Can anyone tell me about the math department at CMU? Any research opportunities for undergrads? Thanks.

The math department is strong, but not really what CMU is renowned for (as I'm sure you know). In my college (SCS), it's extremely easy for undergrades to get involved in research, even as freshmen. It's probably not true to the same degree in the math department (because math research tends to require more previous knowledge than CS research) but I'd imagine it's not impossible to get involved.

What about for MCS?

The math department is part of MCS. MCS comprises math, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering (I think, that might be CIT), biology, and maybe something else that I'm not remembering right now.

Is it easy for freshmen in MCS to do research?

I hope so. I am really interested in some undergrad research opportunities in MCS.

If you are in MCS, could you still do CS research as a freshman?
