Anyone can tell me how good is the Math program at Yale? Is the department small, medium or large (How close is the student-faculty interactions?)?

I think there are very close student-faculty interactions in math here...the department is medium-ish as far as Yale programs go (most are not that big b/c we're not that big a school). It's a great program!

If you're interested in math contests, look at previous Putnam results. We don't do as well as MIT, Princeton, and much less Harvard, but we're right up there in the top 7. Some of those schools are very math/CS oriented like Waterloo so you cannot really compare those with us.

How many math majors are there compared to other majors? Is math an underrepresented major there? If yes, that's mean the profs will most likely give unparalleled attention to math majors! What's the most popular major there?

How many math geniuses are there in Yale? By math geniuses, I mean those that have medals in IMO, USAMO winner, published paper in journals and/or have studied until fourth year of univ math or grad-level math. Any other description of a math genius is welcomed (But do state it!)...

Who (CCer) is a math major at Yale?

My roommate is a math major. I believe yale does quite respectably in math competitions... I think it's in the top ten or fifteen colleges for putnam performance. The impression i've gotten is that we don't have the absolute best math program in the world (and i mean that.. on a global level), but that it's certainly a high quality department. You might want to investigate with someone who's better informed... maybe try to contact a professor or an undergrad in the major.

yale will get respect is basically any field, but is usually thought of as not a top 5 in math. if you are certain about doing math, keep your options open, but if you are undecided and maybe will do math, then yales a great choice.
