Math class and college admissions

Hi all,

I have a 99th percentile sat, top gpa in class, and a hefty senior course load, and great extracurricular. I took calc ab and ap stats in junior year. This year I am taking calc 2 however, im planning on dropping for a variety of reasons. I did very well in calc ab, but I do not feel i learned it well enough to learn calc 2. I also feel i overpacked my senior courseload and need to make time for college applications.

I want to major in finance and business, and the math they study is up to calc one/stats.

I still have a rigorous schedule without calc 2 in the schedule.

what kind of impact will not taking a math class senior year have on my application and earning scholarships? I have taken 4 years of math because i took math freshman, sophomore and two maths junior year.

Your best bet would be to look at the math requirements of the schools that you are considering putting in an application.

You should also look at your school profile? Are you taking the most rigorous math course that your school offers.

As a business finance major, I would advise against dropping math senior year as you will have to pick it up in college. Besides Calc BC will cover some of the math AB concepts so you will have time to refresh.

it not calc bc. its college calc 2 at my school. It is a different curriculum adn starts off past calc ab. Does this change anything? any other thoughts with this info?

thx again

Calc AB usually only covers 1 semester of college calc, where BC covers the full year.

what is the highest level math your school offers

what schools are you considering

we have calc ab, bc, calc 2, and calc 3

i have elite schools that im considering like stanford

also lower ranked schools

calc 2 and 3 are both completely seperate classes than bc and ab at my school

Why then not take Calc BC?

i’d have t ocompletely uproot my schedule and drop other classes. A little bit of a catch 22

How well did you do in calculus AB and the AP test?

On this quiz, how well do you know the material?

Many of these colleges may not have a finance/business major, like say Stanford. What major are you planning to apply in colleges like those? You probably should drop it since you say the courseload could become overwhelming, and you have four years of math.

My son has the same profile as you and took Calc AB and APStats junior year (5 on both tests). He also felt that although he did well on the AP test, he did not really learn as much as he hoped in calculus since it was only 2 days per week for half the year. However, we were advised that he needed 4 years of HS Math even if he had. finished his own HS curriculum for admission to elite colleges. So he is taking a study hall/tutoring until January and will use the extra time to work on his applications and in January he will take a college level Calc 2 class . He will put down Calc 2 on his courses for his senior year and his GC will mention it. This seems like the best compromise. Best of luck.
