another question: I am taking honors precalc and trig right now and was wondering what class I should schedule for next year.
AP Statistics or AP Calculus
idk which one. I plan on majoring in stem, but if I take ap calc junior year, I would take stats senior year and forget all of calc lol. let me know! thx.
School only has one AP Calc, I assume?
My D is in a similar position - Calc AB as a sophomore and only BC and Stats left. She’s going to take BC so her applications show she has competed the Calc sequence at the time of application.
I suspect a quick refresher over the summer before college would be helpful, but I wouldn’t worry too much about retention.
She’ll probably also watch some of the MIT Calc courseware to stay sharp/preview the next topics during senior year.
How are you doing in the math classes that you are currently taking?
Our school didn’t offer anything beyond AP calc AB so the super advanced students took stats junior year and AP calc senior year.
Colleges will see that you are taking AP calc senior year because the common app asks for your senior year courses.
My D is a sophomore in college now and said she was very happy that she had calc senior year with no gap before moving to calc II in college.
The best thing you could do as a prospective STEM major is to take calc junior year and then go on to take calc 2 / calc 3 at a community college. But that is only if you are highly motivated, colleges don’t expect you to do that. The next best option is to go calc and then stats, which is a pretty common sequence even for high schools that offer multiple calc courses. Calc is considered much harder than stats so it will show that you are being challenged in junior year, especially as a STEM major. If you go stats then calc, you may find calc a little harder in senior year since you would have forgotten precalc (maybe).
