I'm applying to Cornell Engineering and they require 4 years of math and in parentheses "2 of algebra, 1 of geometry, and 1 of calculus".

I do have 4 years of math classes but I took geometry and 1 year of algebra in middle school, so they aren't on my high school transcript. How do I communicate this to the admissions people? Or will they look at my high school math courses and know that I've already taken geometry and 1 year of algebra before?
Like my high school transcript will show the following classes:
9th grade - Algebra 2 H
10th grade - Pre-calculus H
11th grade - AP Calculus AB
12th grade - AP Calculus BC

Would you say it's pretty obvious that I already took Geometry and Algebra 1?

You didn’t receive high school credit for Algebra & Geometry taken in middle school? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Talk to your guidance counselor.

Since your on track for AP Calc BC, I think Cornell knows you have the proper math background. That said, it doesn’t hurt to talk to your guidance counselor and perhaps make sure they explicitly discuss your math record in their recommendation.

I don’t think you will have any problem. It is understood that you already took those pre-requisite classes. It is very common for courses taken prior to high school to be left off the transcript. We had the same situation. My son took BC as a 10th grader (as will his younger brother this year).

NJ recently changed the laws regarding education to make this a bit easier (they also provide for alternative methods to achieve credit such as in summers and online). Now high school classes taken prior to 9th grade can be included on a transcript with district approval (which should be automatic if those classes were taken in district). Last week I helped a neighbor advocate for her son to get credit for BC as an 8th grader this year. The head of counseling at the high school had clearly been unaware of the new law for this purpose. He knows now. To leave BC off the transcript seems crazy, but your transcript still shows 4 years of high level math. I would not worry. When you add a personal resume, you might want a line about taking advanced math classes during middle school. Still, it isn’t really needed.
