Hi there! I'm slated to transfer fall of 2015, and have almost all my ducks in a row. I'm looking at four UC's and one CSU for safety. By the time this fall is through, I will be very close to completing IGETC, with only three courses needed to complete it. My main worry though is that I am going to complete my math course (statistics) in Winter, and I don't know if that will count against my application. All requirements will be fulfilled by Spring 2015. My counselor advised that this would make me ineligible for Santa Barbara TAG, but I'm wondering if it's problematic for the other UC's as well, just as far as applications go.

My schools are as follows: UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and Sonoma State.

I’m taking stats in the Winter too, which is my math IGETC req. There is nothing wrong with this. As long as your IGETC and major prereqs are done by Spring you are fine, that’s all that matters.

Really weird that you lose TAG for taking stats in Winter. I have no idea why that would happen.

Other than SB, I don’t think you should have any issues. I know to TAG Irvine you need to complete your math by Summer (summer 14), but UCI isn’t on your list, so I think you’re good. For CSU, as long as you complete by Spring, you’re fine.

I’m guessing your major is not math related, so you should be fine. Personally I would take it in the fall, but it’s up to you. But yeah, don’t expect to be be accepted to SB though (not only for TAG, but in general, I believe). For the others it shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks, y’all! I wish I could take it in fall but it’s not an option for me according to the academic plan I made with my counselor.

music1990, why should I not expect to be accepted? I’ll have all my requirements met by Spring. I doubt Santa Barbara would reject me just because of timing…

Do not TAG UCSB as they require it be done by fall and will definitely toss you out. You will still be in the regular pool, though - although UCSB will most likely reject you even in the regular pool if they don’t see a math grade somewhere on the transcript (even rudimentary). Since you are doing it in winter it should be OK as no one looks at the application thoroughly until around Feb and hopefully you can upgrade your winter grade by then. Actually, there are a few UCs that say they want math completed by fall - can’t recall which ones, but it’s on the transfer matrix, I believe. But it doesn’t seem to be enforced.

My daughter did her math IP spring and got into all the UCs she applied to, with this caveat: she was kicked out of UCSB TAG, went into regular UCSB pool, would have been kicked out had she not had int algebra in there. She was told this specifically by a UCSB counselor. There was no issue with any other campus.

Since you are taking math in winter it should be OK, but do not TAG UCSB. Fall math is part of their TAG requirement. It’s a waste of a TAG. TAG Santa Cruz.

Yeah, I was spitting bullets when I found out her counselor screwed the pooch and had my daughter TAG SB with that math req not completed. In fact, how I found out about the math issue was on this site. UCSB was really fast at communicating but she was out of TAG, and then there was the issue of her remaining in as a regular applicant. Luckily she had a rudimentary math class. For once, being bad at math paid off. :D

I commend this OP’s counselor for being on top of it.

When I was applying last year I noticed that some UC’s stated that for the 2015 cycle they “strongly recommend” applicants finish math by the fall for priority consideration.

I’ve stated for a long time that math taken in the winter or spring is OK. I still believe that. That being said, admissions keep getting more competitive. Only put off math if you have to. Do you have to take algebra in the fall?

Man, you guys have me second guessing my own plan. I’m taking stats at UCLA Extension in Winter. My Fall schedule is set. Hopefully UCLA has no problems with this. They shouldn’t, I mean, my counselor never brought it up after looking over my schedule, and TAP is still an option for me. My fallback school is UCI, hopefully they don’t freak either. Hmm.

I think you’ll be fine if you take your transferable math course in the winter, you’ll still be able to add the grade for the update during Januaray. Also, a source told me that UCLA started looking at transfer applicants this year in early March. So even if you do miss the January update, you can still submit your course grade and I’m sure they’ll see it.

In mid February of this year I informed UCLA after the winter update deadline passed that I completed a transferable math class. They responded a few days later and said that the grade I earned in that class would be considered. They implied that they’ll consider new grades earned all the way until the end of March, which I thought was generous given that UCLA gets the most transfer applications of all the UCs and releases admission decisions in mid-late April.

Oh wow, didn’t know that about UCSB! I’ll definitely be TAGing Santa Cruz, then. I have to retake some courses with bad grades for fall, so that my GPA has a sharp raise and I can be considered according to my skill level. Unfortunately there are 4 of them. I so wish I had tackled the math issue earlier on, but my schedule’s set and there isn’t much I can do now.
