Math Classes At Different Community Colleges

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you guys know if taking Linear Algebra and Differential Equations at two separate community colleges will affect my chances of getting admitted to a particular UC. I know some UCs such as UC Berkeley, have a class which covers both Differential Equations and Linear Algebra so I’m not sure of whether or not they would want us to take both of those classes at the same place. I hope you guys reply soon and thanks for any help!

For most UC’s, I don’t believe it would. I am taking linear algebra at my cc this semester (finishing in 2 weeks!) and diff eq at a nearby cc because they don’t require lin alg as a pre-requisite for it (but my cc does, so I couldn’t take it this semester)

I’m a math major and have gotten accepted to UCSB/UCR this Fall with a fairly mediocre GPA, haven’t heard back from the rest yet. It’ll be perfectly fine for most of them since lin alg and diff eq are two separate pre-requisites that need to be fulfilled as articulated on assist.

The only exception, as you’ve noted, is Berkeley, which requires {lin alg, diff eq} as a pre-requisite for their single Math 22 (?) class, and while it might not have terrible consequences, it might be preferable to take them at the same institution so that the assist articulation is technically valid.

Berkeley does take a very holistic approach to applications, however, and they must be aware that the majority of CC lin alg and diff eq courses are roughly equivalent and probably very few taught in the Berkeley style of one introductory class combining both subjects.

Is there any compelling reason for you to take them at different cc’s? If not, I don’t see why you would and if so, then what can you do, right?

I don’t think it will have an affect at all. UC’s understand that certain classes aren’t offered at certain CC and as long as the class articulates, you should be fine. If there is a pre-requisite issue, you can always match the courses you are taking with Assist.org to make sure your classes are correlating with the classes at UC’s.

Well the only reason I would want to take Linear Algebra and Differential equations at separate community college is because my community college does not offer Differential equations in the fall 2016 semester, so I would have to take more than 20 units nest Spring in order to transfer on time. I feel taking Differential equations next semester would let me have a more manageable last semester before I transfer.

It shouldn’t be a big deal. I got accepted into UCSD, UCD, UCR, UCSB, and pending UCI.

To give you an idea, I originally put on my application in November that I was going to take Calc 3 in fall and linear algebra and differential equations in spring. I ended up dropping calc 3 and enrolling at a different community college called Coastline that offers calc 3 and linear algebra and differential equations online. I reported in the transfer update in January that I dropped calc 3 and that I enrolled in Coastline for Spring and would be taking calc 3 and linear alg and diffy equation there.

Also, I am still taking courses at my original community college and taking math at coastline(coastline is about 2 hours away from my community college). So, I think the UCs don’t care where you take it as long as you complete you pre-requisites before enrolling in fall.

Apart from possibly UCB I would just say it doesn’t matter based on the fact that neither are a sequence of each other like Calc 1/2/3 are. Call them and ask btw.

@calmrod11235 You can call Cal and ask but I would say it sounds like it’ll be fine. I would recommend it actually, because I also have a schedule this Spring like @poppab5 taking calc III, lin ald, and D.E. this semester. With CS and Spanish, I’m taking 23 units and I wouldn’t really recommend 20+ units your last semester like you mention you’d have to do otherwise. It’s doable, and I (barely) have As in all my classes, but it takes a toll and adds to the stress of transferring a great deal more than it should.
