Since I had gotten a 5 on Calculus BC, does it mean I'm not allowed to take 31A and 31B? I know I should be taking 32a, but am I not allowed for 31a and 31B?

You’re allowed to take 31b or 32a

I’m a L&S major by the way

The AP credit page says
Ask at orientation to get a definitive answer because its not clear from this webpage what they will do. What I think they do is award you credit according to the chart for the AP tests you have taken (in your case Math 31A and 31B); therefore if you enroll in the classes again at UCLA you will not get credit for taking them, which means you may not be taking enough units to be considered a fulltime student, which has other bad consequences.

Of course if you have not had your scores officially sent to UCLA (and are not required to do so) then you could start with 31A. Some people who take calculus senior year choose to do this. It makes the class easier when you retake it at UCLA, and also by being “on-quarter” there are going to be more class times to choose from since many more sections of 31A are offered then 31B or 32A.

So should I send it in or not? I haven’t send in an official one yet, am I better off starting 31A or 32A. I felt I didn’t really learn much from my calc bc class in HS, so should I just get another rerun at it? Does it matter if I want to get into medical school?

Most people recommend not retaking classes. It’s a waste of time and it’s usually better to start these sequences early so you can finish your lower division classes more quickly. Math courses don’t seem to be that hard as long as you go to class and do all your work.

I haven’t taken math in over a year and a half haha and I’m planning on taking 32A in the fall. I think it’s mostly new concepts anyways so as long as you can do basic derivatives you should be fine.

Are you required to send them in? I think UCLA considers AP scores in admission, so if you took the test junior year and put the score on your application then you probably have to send it in. If you just took it this year then you told them you would take the AP class and your HS transcript confirms it; they don’t know if you took the AP test so can’t expect the score.

If (1) you have other AP classes and want credit for them (2) are not required to send in the math AP score – then you can cancel the math AP score and send in the others. But once UCLA gets the official score you can’t tell them not to use it (to my understanding).

If you are considering med school then you should know that many med schools will not accept AP credit to satisfy the college math requirement. Do a google search to find out more. If you are a science or engineering student and plan on taking another year of math after 31A/B then it doesn’t matter if you get the AP credit or not since you’ll take another year of math anyway.

I never listed I would be taking those AP classes. Regardless which one I would be taking, I’ll still end up having to take one year of math. So if if I start off with 31A I then move on to 31B and 32a. If I do get exempted from 31a/b, then I’ll have to do 32a, 32b, 33a as med school would not count 31a/b from ap credit. Do medical schools regard what classes you take specifically as I understand taking 32a,32b, and 33a would be harder than taking 31a,31b, and 32a. So would a med or any graduate school favor harder classes or would it be irrelevant all together and getting a high gpa for classes would be the only thing of importance.
