math/comp sci at emory

any input please regarding math/comp sci at emory. My son is trying to decide between cal, duke, emory, jh, u of ch, and emory. emory isn't up their in the rankings for math and comp sci compared to the other schools, but he really liked the campus and the kids he met and it's a lot less expensive than the other schools. opinions?

I’m a math major with cs minor at Emory.

And, honest opinion, maybe Emory wasn’t the right place for me.

The classes I’ve taken so far… I’ve felt were so easy that I’m not prepared for graduate school. (Professors here are from the elite schools, of course… Berkeley, MIT, etc… So maybe they are preparing me well. I just don’t feel like they are.)

Campus/Students/Weather/City wise, this is perfect for me.

But sometimes I sit down and think “maybe I should’ve listened to my parents and gone to Brown instead”.

I guess, I’ll know for sure when I’m looking for a job. But if I could go back in time, I’d realize that priority #1 is academic quality (and Emory is superb for Bio, Chem, Liberal Arts, Political Science, etc. But not really for math).

Once again, the Professors are amazing people/smart guys. I just don’t know if they’ve prepared me well enough. At least the ones I’ve gotten.

thanks! that’s exactly the kind of input i’m looking for. we like all the things you mentioned, but concerned about the academic strength. i’m feeling he shouldn’t worry about it as an undergrad, but i like your perspective. wondering if the same could be said for duke? maybe u of ch is best for great academics and size. cal is great for math and comp sci, but seems way to0 big. we’ll see when we visit this week.

If it was me and money wasn’t an issue, I’d choose between Cal and Hopkins.
Chicago isn’t the place for me because the life is so different from life at Emory.

If I went back to my choices, I’d pick Brown/NYU.

Your son has five great choices. Each of those schools has a different personality, sometimes very much so.

I’d go with the one that he likes the best. An unhappy student is less likely to do well.

I’m thinking about majoring in math/cs. Could you please tell me how big the classes are? Also, I’ve read a lot of unfavorable reviews of professors in math and cs classes. What was your experience with them?
Thank you!

the math professors are great (and very smart). Especially the upper level ones. I feel they dumb the material down too much, though. 25 students a class, give or take in math

idk about CS, but my friends dont like those profs

So professors are smart, but students self-study mainly? And grades are not suffered still? Hmm…I am interested in biomath or biostatistics ( I think I do), but I don’t have much experience with either, I would love to have a discussion like environment with hands on experience, Is Emory math / cs a right place for that? Are there many math/cs/biology classes with less than 20 students in Emory ? Thank you
