Hey quick question- do any of you math/science geniuses out there do AMC/AIME/USAMTS ? If so, how do I get good at those competitions? I really want to excel at them because they look good on college, and I like math, I guess. Is it just lots of practice or something, because I have some practice tests. Or is it just a creative mind? And how do you have a creative/intuitive mind anyways? Genes? Practice? I don't know. Anyone have any suggestions?

"I really want to excel at them because they look good on college, and I like math, I guess."

LAWL. CC in a sentence.

There are lots of practice questions on the official site @ MAA American Mathematics Competitions - AMC

Oh wow, thanks so much! but I was wondering just how to think critically for any type of these math exams, not just the AMC. Thanks anyways.

hahah. i can't really help you there, cause i suck at them..

you should check out the aops forums, they're usually helpful. and the books are expensive, but they do help a lot.

Yea, look at Art of Problem Solving .

thanks to all of you, good websites.

I took both the AMC and the AIME. AMC- 102, AIME-9. Sadly, I didn't qualify for the USAMO.

all you can do is get more math experience
try taking abstract algebra, that'll get you thinking like a mathematician
oh, and you might want to brush up on specific topics too, like probability

^Ses, why the huge discrepancy in the scores? About 100 on the AMC corresponds to 3-5 on the AIME...Nine is WAY out there.

EDIT: I just realized this post could seem abrasive. I didn't mean it that way at all. I was just wondering whether there was some reason the AMC didn't go as well as it should have. You don't get 9 on the AIME by guessing (although I randomly guessed the answer to number 10 this year and got it correct), so I assume that there was some reason for the AMC being lower than it should have been.

I did mathcounts twice to raise my grade

usually some 8 year old asian kid wins
