Math courses in Spring prior to transfer

Hello,

I’m eagerly awaiting my reply from UCSC, UCSD, UCB, and UCLA regarding my application for Astrophysics transfer. I’m currently taking 21 semester units this Spring, three of which are math/pre-req classes - Differential equations, Electromagnetism, and Calculus 3. I’ve been reading around that taking these classes in the Spring is “frowned upon” but I can’t find anything that points to this being something consistent or official. My transcripts show I can handle heavy work loads, i.e. Fall 2014 I had 23 units and all A’s, 17 of which were Math/physics. Will my load this semester hurt my chances? I suspect it will be a repeat of Fall for all A’s if my current exam trend continues. Thanks!

Sounds awesome but 17+ units is totally doable for someone who isnt working or involved in EC’s. If you are involved in some stuff then that would be pretty impressive

Thanks for the reply. No ECs to report here. My nose has been firmly planted in the books for the last 1.5 years. I have a long college past, but all my recent work hasn’t been less than an A. Hoping for the best.

You should be fine. Is there a specific reason why you didn’t go to CC in 2013 (you said you’ve been at cc for 1.5 years so I’m assuming you had a gap somewhere)?

My journey through CC started in 2008 after HS. Major changes and health related issues later, I’m comfortable where I’m at now. There are a few W’s and unfavorable things in the far past that aren’t related to my major, but I’ve salvaged the GPA to 3.7.

You should be fine. The average GPA for Astrophysics admits at UCLA in 2013 was 3.63, so you’re well off there, and UC’s love upward trends, I’m sure you’ll get a number of acceptances. Goodluck!
