Is it possible to take precalculus and AP calculus at the same time? Or do you have to take precalc before calculus?

Normally, yeah, you kinda need to take precalc before calc. It is called precalc for a reason.

People told me that precalc is nothing like calc though.

i took calc without precalc and i got almost a 100 in the class and a 5 on the ap exam

I think md4me is probably one of those rare geniuses or his/her (sorry) school is much better at prepping people than mine (noncompetitive public hs). I took a PreCalc/Trig class last year, and no, it's not like Calc, but it teaches you things that you need to know to take Calc. AP Physics C Mech also helped me out a lot in preping for Calc (I'm doing summer work now).

Calc isn't really anything like precalc, but you need to be really good with pre-calc concepts to do well in it.

you took calculus without precalculus? well with calculus u dont need pre-calc, u just need trig, but for ap calculus you do need pre-calculus....i have never heard of someone being able to take ap calculus wihout pre-calculus (math analysis) already completed.

i took calc without taking precalc because i took ib methods 1 which is basically calc ab. i learned all of trig in algebra II so i was able to take the ap calc ab exam.

Precalculus, aka Algebra II and Trigonometry with some Statistics for spice, is mostly the foundation of calculus. You will need the Trig section when it comes to integrals in particular; besides, Calculus deals with math modeling, which involves any type of function (transcendental, algebraic, and series).

Precalc is just a course name, this is really something you should talk to the calculus teacher at your school about.

Precalc at my school is trigonometry first semester and calc A second semester. Then if you're confident about the material, you go on to BC Calc, and if you're not, you take AB, retaking the A section. If you take trigonometry instead of precalculus at my school, you can still go into AB Calculus.
