I want to place out of Math 104 and start the semester with Math 114. I took Calculus AB as a senior. Will the department exam be essentially Calculus AB + a couple of BC concepts? Does anyone know how difficult the exam will be? Thanks!

The math department website has past finals for classes that you can look through to see what the class covers.

On a relevant topic. I have done Further Mathematics at A levels. Checking through the syllabus of Math 114 and Math 240, I realized that I had done more than half of the topics in both courses. Is it possible that I place out of both of them or atleast one of them?

You could try to take a placement exam. You could also just sign up for 241, get a C, and get retroactive credit for all the other courses.

If you only took Calc AB, you don’t want to skip to MATH114. Penn’s Math department is set up as follows: MATH103 = Calc AB; MATH104 = Calc BC; MATH114 = Multivariable

MATH104 is Calc BC with a lot of extra detail, and it’s crucial that you have a lot of BC down cold to do well in 114. At the same time, if you have looked over the final exam for MATH104 and think you’d be fine, then you can try to place out of it, or you could just not bother and enroll in MATH114. Regardless of how you do on the placement test, you only get credit if you take a higher Math course. In other words, whether you take the placement test or not, if you get a C or better in MATH114, you will get two course units. Also, if you take MATH240, you will only get two course units – one for 240 and one for 114.

moizukh, i was in the same position when i came in as a freshman. depending on how much you have learned, i would suggest just taking 240. I came in with calc bc credit, as well as a semester each of linear algebra and multivariable calculus. if you know diff eq on top of those, i recommend going to 241, but otherwise 240 is ahead enough as it is!

Along the same lines, I’m transferring into Penn from the University of Maryland. There, I took Calc I for pre meds, bio majors, etc. I want to go to medical school in the future and so I need Calc I. However, Penn’s Calc I seems a lot more advanced so I don’t think they’ll give me credit for Math 104. If I took the placement exam, would that satisfy my Calc I credit as long as I still took Calc II at Penn? Also, what kind of grade do you receive on your transcript for the course, if you only take the placement exam? Sorry if it seems like I’m stealing the thread. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Math 104 at Penn is a normal Calc II course at other schools. If you place out of a course you only get credit for it, no grade.
