How big is the math department at harvard (i.e. How close are the students-faculty interactions there?)?

How close are the students-faculty interactions there?<< Is totally depends on yourself.

From talking with two of my math concentrator friends, the department is pretty close. One of my friends is in a class of just himself, two other students and the professor! Generally, most of the non-introductory classes are relatively small (I'm tempted to say 15 students on average, but you would be get a better sense asking someone who is a math concentrator.)

The man has spoken! LOL! Any Harvard Math major here?

Is Math one of the least popular major at Harvard? If it is, then the department will most probably be "small" and can give extensive personal attention to the concentrators.

From what I've heard the math department at Harvard is large compared to other schools. That's actually one of the reasons Harvard math people suggested going to Harvard during prefrosh weekend - lots of other math students to talk to. (for the record I'm not going there...) From what I've seen (skewed because I've only really seen math 55), student-prof interactions are really close.

Where are you going then?

MIT. just liked the feel better there.

Not true, cc2! You can be an insanely hardcore 50 hrs/week on psets math major, or you can take a much more relaxed approach to the concentration. The Math concentrators I know are (unsurprisingly) in the latter group.

How many math majors are there per graduation class? And, how does that number compared to other majors? Is math one of the most popular major at Harvard or one of the least popular?

Justforgetme - I said "should not", not "do not".

Visionary - Call the department (495-2171 ) to find out the current number.

This chart shows the numbers of Math concentrators for the last few years through 2006. I doubt the current numbers are very different: FAS Handbook for Students: Chapter 3: Fields of Concentration

A note on the statistics posted by mathmom. Until two years ago, Harvard students declared a major at the end of freshman year, unlike other colleges where students waited until sophomore year to declare. So I expect that the number of math majors at Harvard is similar to the number at Princeton.

And your point is?

I mean why out of nowhere marite says about Princeton? Love the info though (Where's the MIT's data? Harvard, Princeton and MIT are said to be the top three institutions best for Math)!

Any other info about Princeton? And MIT too?
