math for liberal art majors vs stats

The only good math professor teaching stats for spring just got full. Nothing but horrible teachers are left. However math for liberal art majors is avaliable with a good professor. Idk if i should take it tho whats the difference? What exactly is math for liberal art majors?

I assume math for liberal arts major = finite mathematics. That’s how they describe that course in my school.

Well, presumably, the course you speak of is similar in that it’s three units whereas statistics is four. That means it requires less study time and is probably easier as a result. I intend to take the class in the winter session; I’ve heard it’s not that hard.

I think you should take it.

Math for Liberal Arts does sound like Finite Math. I found Finite Math top be a lot of fun. We started with some basics of Algebra like linear equations, linear programming, and matrices. Then the “core” of the course was finance (so, simple and compound interest, annuities, and computing installment payments). Then we touched on some basic Statistics in the form of probability, which turned out to be helpful because I took Statistics after this class and was way ahead of the curve at least in the beginning. Finite math seems to cover a lot of basic mathematical concepts that have practicability in the real word. Sample problems include figuring out car and mortgage payments, how many combinations or pairs you can make with a set of letters or objects, and so on. Pretty good stuff, but IMHO, the real power is in Statistics.

I also recommend the “math for liberal arts” course if it counts toward GE, your major prerequisites, or transfer credit. Then, once you take Stats you will be well prepared for the firstortion of the class and it will feel very much just like review.

Thanks for the info, turtlerock. Now I have a good idea of what to expect for my finite math class.

I’m kind of mad at myself for enrolling in stats for the fall instead since I dropped it because of its difficulty. Yeah, I know, stats is supposed to be easy…well, my instructor made sure it wouldn’t be. lol.

Oh well.

I ended up enrolling in math for liberal arts students. Instead of stats I couldnt risk having a bad teacher. That happened with my non transferable intermediate math and i had to drop it. I know you can transfer thus math yo UC but im a little worried im not sure if it transfers to CSU?

I think nearly any course that transfers to UC will also be accepted at CSU (sometimes under different GE requirements, but the credits themselves are at least accepted). You can check the transferability of each specific course at your CC by using Assist. Let me know if you don’t know how to check that on Assist.

Unless you’re a Social Sciences major, then you can take Liberal Arts Math. Go ahead.
