Nights
The table above shows the number of consecutive nights that each of five families stayed at a certain hotel during a 14-night period. If the Sui family’s stay did not overlap with the Lisa family’s stay, which of the
14 nights could be a night on which only one of the five families stayed at the hotel?
(A) The 2nd (B) The 4th (C) The 5th (D) The 8th (E) The 10th

ans (A)

I think you should rewrite it cause I don’t see Lisa’s family there and I think by Sui you wrote Lui or vice versa

^Exactly. Please clarify, and we’ll be happy to help! :)

A fitness center purchased a number of exercise machines: 4 costing $1700 each, 8 costing 1300, and X costing 1200 each, where X is a positive odd integer. If the median price for all the exercise machines purchased by the fitness center was 1300, what is the greatest possible value of X?

4 +8 -1 = 11 but why ? ? ? is this is a standardized formula for similar equations and yes if x was a positive even it will be 8 +4 -2 = 10 ???

I’m gonna try my best to make sense
So for your first problem, it can’t be B, C, and D. The reason why is because we know on all 3 days either the Liu or Benton family will be there. However, the Jackson family is staying for 10 days and no matter what day they start on (1, 2, 3, 4,) they will be there on the 4th 5th and 8th. Same goes for choice E. If they start on the 1rst day they will still be there on the 10th. What you’re left with is the 2nd: Either the Liu or Benton family is there and all the other families start after the 2nd day.

As for your 2nd problem, given the average, the only x value I could find that will work is 11.

In the second problem, you are asked for the highest value of x that will cause the median to be 1300. Because 1200 is less than 1300, we want a number of x equal to the number of machines that are greater than or equal to 1300 minus the number of machines lower than 1300, minus 1 so that one of the machines that are 1300 is in the middle (hence the median being 1300). Thus, since we have 4 machines that are 1700 and 8 that are 1300, then we have 11 of the machines to be 1200. That way, there would still be a 1300 in the middle without going too far or too less:

12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 17 17 17 17
