pg 489 # 8 i have no idea what the question is asking

pg. 490 # 12

both are probs w/ diagrams, hence me not posting the questions.

nvm, got 12 figured out. but i could use help w/ 13 on pg 491.

The price of a telephone was first increased by 10 percent and then the new price was decreased by 25 percent. The final price was what percent of the initial price?

A) 78 %
B) 80%
C) 82.5 %
D) 85%
E) 87.5%

Original price = 100%
Increase by 10% = 110%
Decrease by 25% = .75*110%= 82.5%
Final = 82.5%

why do you add 10 percent but can not subtract 25?

because you are taking 25% from the new price (110%)

you are subracting if you calculate it with the numbers they give you. however, an increase of 10% most people know is 110%, and a 25% decrease is the same as taking 75% of the original.

100 + .1(100) = 110
110 - .25(110) = 82.5

thanks for clearing that up!
