Math help!

If (1 x 10^n) + (7 + 10^5) = 7.001 x 10^5, what is the value of n?

n= 2

THAT IS EASY

OK, I mean HOW did you arrive at the answer (i.e., what is the explanation for the solution)?? Thanks!

LOOK

7.001x10^5 means 700100

(7 + 10^5) means 700000 plus (1 x 10^n) — you should put the number that will satisfy the upper answer so 10^2 means 100.

I hope that helped.

Good Luck.

7.001 * 10^5 = 700100

700100 = 700000 + 100

700000 = 7 * 100000 = 7 * 10^5

100 = 1 * 10^2

700100 = 70000 + 100 = 7 * 10^5 + 1 * 10^2

n=2

It’s an equation. Subtract 7 from 7.001 and you’re left with .001. 10^n=.001x10^5 => 10^n = 100 => 10^2 = 100 so n=2.

Thanks all for the help!

You could always use the CAS on a TI-89 or graph the function on a TI-83/84.

That is way too much work for this problem…

1 x 10^n = 100

Solve for n…

n = 2

I personally have problems working with scientific notation by hand, so I would use a calculator for this problem. It’s not the fastest, but it’s the most accurate and effective (for me, at least).
