Math I instead of Math II?

I'm planning on majoring in math at a top-tier college (Ivy League, MIT, UChicago), but I haven't taken pre-calculus. Therefore, I know very little of the material on the Sat II Math II. I skipped pre-cal and am taking AP Cal AB (which I've ran a constant 100 in all year), and self-studying for the BC test, which I think I'll do very well on. I also have a 770 on my SAT I Math, so I think I show enough mathematical aptitude. Would it be acceptable to take the level I instead of learning all of that on my own? How much would it hurt me?

I believe that you can ace Math Level 2 if you aced in Calculus, and I think schools like MIT cares for Math Level 2 more than Level 1, but that’s just what I think. I’m in alg 2/trig right now, and I got a 780 on January’s Math Level 2 test (retaking this May for that 800 hopefully). I didn’t learn pre-calc either and I didn’t do so bad.

By the way, can you answer my question? Did you skip pre-calc through teacher’s recommendation or did you just apply for it? And I’m also wondering if you can go straight to Calc BC without taking pre-calc…

It’s really kool that you could do it that way, but at my rural public high school, I haven’t learned 70% of the Math II material. Calculus (at least AP Calculus material) doesn’t teach you any of it either.

I spoke with the calculus teacher beforehand, and then just signed up for it. The logistics just depend on your school, but there’s nothing material-wise that you need from pre-cal other than basic trig (which my teacher reviewed at the beginning of the year).

There’s no point in you self studying BC you’re not allowed to take the AB and BC tests on the same day. As for the SAT II use this [SparkNotes: SAT Subject Test: Math Level 2: Introduction to the SAT II](<a href=“SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides”>SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides) and you’ll be good if you self study.

I would take Math 1.

MIT doesn’t have any preference between Level 1 and 2

"Testing Requirements

For native English speakers: We require the SAT Reasoning Test with the writing component or the ACT with the writing test. We do not prefer one over the other. In addition, we require two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). We do not have a preference as to which science you take or which level math you take."

Thanks mook32 and mp22,

@mook32, BC covers AB and BC, it’s a two-semesters-in-one test. But I’ll check out the Sparknotes.

@mp22, are you sure that’s not just the “official” response? Because, isn’t Math II harder?
