Math II Subject Test

How do you feel about the Math II SAT Subject Test. I got my score today of 650, which is disappointingly low for me. I went into the test without having known what exactly was on it, though I assumed it would focus on Algebra II skills. I did not know how many questions were on it, and found myself extremely pressed for time while taking it, not finishing a significant number of questions.

This is extremely disappointing to me as I do not have difficulty finishing other math exams on time, and I consider math my strongest subject besides science. I’m known among my teachers, particularly my math teacher, as someone with exceptional problem solving skills and an ability to approach problems in completely novel ways.

Has this happened to anybody else, where you scored lower on a subject test in a subject in which you otherwise succeed? Does anyone else feel that the Math II or another subject test does not accurately assess one’s ability to succeed in that subject? And should I not submit my score on this exam if I am applying to a college seeking to study science?

@hangontoyourego3 You should retake Math II (or take Math I), if you can. Math II assumes pretty much anything up to and including pre-calculus, so you likely went in unprepared.

For the record, I took Math II and Physics, but many years ago.

@MITer94 Thank you for your reply. I guess I will retake it. I should clarify, though, that while I expected it to focus on second-year algebra, I have taken pre-calculus as well and did very well, which makes it all the more disappointing.

In my opinion, no one should take the Math 2 until they have taken multiple practice tests from the prep books, preferably in the weeks leading up to the exam. Math is my S2’s strong subject, but he needed many practice tests to get his speed up in order to just barely finish the real test in the allotted time. We alternated between College Board prep book tests and Barron’s. Barron’s practice tests seem to have a higher proportion of the difficult questions. We alternated between the two in order to alleviate the stress, because he tended to get about 690 on the Barron’s and 800 on the CB practice tests. That way, he was pushed to do better by the Barron’s, but built up his confidence with the CB tests. He studied each of his wrong answers carefully.

I would have to agree with you that the Math 2 test does not accurately assess math ability simply because of the limited amount of time. I personally believe that students who know the math but can’t do it as quickly as the test conditions demand should not be penalized. I was very happy to see that one of our local public universities gives a math placement exam that is not timed.

My advice is to study the prep books, take timed practice tests, and retake the test.

@BunnyBlue That sounds like a good plan. I guess I’ll get those two review books and retake the exam as you and MITer94 suggested. Thank you for your response.
