Hi I've took my SATII math IIC and got 700 which I expect to be much more better. Do you parents think I should retake my math IIC? I wanted to major in the social sciences and has written that down in my app. Do colleges really care if I got a not-so-decent math IIC score? I am thinking whether retaking it or not.

It depends on where you are applying. If it is one of the schools that uses some form of academic index, a 770, say, is more helpful than an 700. Also, you will be expected to understand statistics in the social sciences. So math is important - just not as important as in engineering, for example.

It depends where you want to go to school and also how much you studied for the first time you took it. Do you know the average SAT 2s for the colleges you are applying to? For your college choices and social sciences it may be fine. My son was applying to MIT and other schools like it. He took Math IIc in May of his junior year without studying too much, at the same time that he took Writing and US History SAT 2s, and got a low 700 score. He didn't think this would look good for applying to MIT and studied the Barron's book a lot during the next month. He retook in June and got 800. However, his case was different and 700 may be fine for you.

I think it would depend on what schools you are interested in attending. Is Math IIC required at those schools or just the SAT I? Do you have two other SAT II subjects with higher scores that more closely relate to what you want to study? Is trying Math IC a possibility at the schools you want? Previous threads here indicate that it can sometimes be easier. How near are you to deadlines for submission of scores? Do you have some practice tests to give you a better chance of improving your score if you retake? All those things should be considered, IMO.

It depends; if you think you can do MUCH better and your other SATII's are relatively low, retake it. But I got into Stanford with a 720, social sciences oriented, and my other scores were higher. Don't sweat it.

That's a fine score. Most applicants would die to have such a score. It's true that IIc has a "high" curve, so in terms of percentile a 700 isn't as high on this test as it is on other SAT II's. But you still show command of this subject, and certainly adequate command for an expected social science major. (I'm a social scientist, and I would mark your score as a + factor, and then look to the rest of your application to see whether everything else is strong.)

Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless you are applying to MIT or Cal Tech. My son got a 640 on the Math IIC, and that was the highest of his SAT II's. However, he is not into test-taking. Once is enough for him. So he has decided that the colleges will have to accept his scores, or he will just go somewhere else.

So, unless you have your heart set on a particular very demanding college and feel you would do a lot better if you tried again, spend the time working on your passion, not studying for tests.
