math iic questions

the only prime factors of a number n are 2, 5, 7, and 17. which of the following could NOT be a factor of n?
a) 10
b) 20
c) 25
d) 30
e) 34

which of the following shifts of the graph of y=x^2 would result in the graph of y=x^2-2x+k, which k is a constant greater than 2?
a) left 2 units and up k units
b) left 1 unit and up k+1 units
c) right 1 unit and up k+1 units
d) left 1 unit and up k-1 units
e) right 1 unit and up k-1 units

what purpose does the clause "which k is a constant greater than 2" serve?

1- d... If the number had a factor of 30 it would also have a factor of 3- a prime number not listed.

2- e... graph it.

First question is of course 30, since it has a factor of 3, and 3 is prime.

Complete the square for second question and you will realize it is E.

y = x^2 - 2x + k can be written as y = (x-1)^2 + (k - 1) It is now evident that the vertex is shifted over 1 unit to the right and up (k-1) units. Furthermore if k < 2, it will be simply 1 unit or 0 units up. Also if k is constant < 0, it will be going down, not up. This clause clarifies the choices.

quick solution to 1 is to multiply 2x5x7x17 and try dividing those numbers. d gives 39.6666 or something.

why cant u have 2 calculators out on the test? i have a ti 83+ that im more familiar with, and a new ti-89 that might come in handy with the "solve" function... i dont know what to do.

i don't think most proctors mind if you use two calculators
