I got 720 w/ not so much prep. I did 3 practice tests out the REA practice book, which seemed to not be very accurate. I am not in pre-calc anymore (this yr when i took it).

Since I got 790 Math on the SAT I, I figured this would look bad, esp. w/ the curve and esp. b/c the SAT II is "real math". So I'm going to retake it.

What's the best way to prepare for an 800 for someone who primarily needs a precalc refresher course?

For thorough revision of the topics use your pre-calc book and any notes you have from the course. When you are confident in your knowledge, start taking practice tests. Do not focus on a single practice book, but try as many tests as possible, that way you can discover the gaps in your knowledge and revise further. Beware: Barron's SAT IIC tests are unreasonably complicated!

I used Barron's as a supplement to my Precalc course . . . I mainly used it for the practice tests and to review permutations and combinations. In my opinion, Barron's usually way overprepares you if you use it the right way, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Edit: Oh and I took the SAT II Math IIC in May . . . no scores yet, so I guess I can't really say how effective Barron's is, but I think it's definitely not a bad learning tool.

Barron's practice tests are a good study tool; the tests make you look up a lot of stuff you did not know before, and also a lot of stuff that won't appear often on the real test. (Moivre's formula for complex numbers, for instance) Just don't stress out if your Barron's practice scores are a bit lower...

for those who have taken it...
what was a book will accurate practice tests most similar to the real test? (and that additionally had the best test-specific prep)

I had a similar experience with Barron's. I took the SAT Math IIC in March having finished trig last year (I'm in calc this year), so I used some text books as well as Barron's to refresh my memory. It made for some unnecessary stress-I suggest taking it right after trig. After doing some of the practice tests, I thought I was going to get a 500 on the real SAT II since Barron's is incredibly hard compared to the real one. So I was surprised to see IIC so easy and even more surprised when I got an 800.

Kaplan's Practice Test B is very similar to the real test, though I did not use the book for test-prep, just for a practice test. Ah, and the test in Real SATIIs i very important of course, it gives you a good idea of all the topics covered.

What was the curve for the Math IIC test? When I was reading the Sparknotes guide, it said that I could skip 7 and miss 8 and still get around a 700. I thought I followed that strategy. Now I got a horrible score-630!!!! And the sad thing is is that this is the 3rd freaking time I've taken it!

Will it look bad to colleges (especially Columbia) if I take the Math IIC four times just to be able to get a 700+??? Damn, dejection and depression suck.

I just checked my score
800 may
buy Real SAT2s
Barron's is overwork,
the tests on that book are not similar to the real tests at all
but if u have time go for it.(personally, i didnt like it)
i used PR math book but just took the tests.
After taking the test, i reviewed the questions i got wrong
and used the table of contents to find the concepts needed to solve the question.(nail them down in your head)
Do this again and again and again after each practice test.

got a 780 using barron's and sparknotes. the barron's tests are way harder than the real test (i was getting in the 600 range) so i didn't take all of them because they were so frustrating.

i got an 800 too
ummm
i would say that PR had same some pretty darn useful formulas
also some of the stuff in barrons is a waste of time
but they have a graphing calculator section
u should input the formulas into your calculator- it was very useful for that triange problem

also once ur done prepping
u should take a REAL SAT IIs by College Board- that way you can accurately guage how well you will do on test day
i took it about a week and a half before and got a 780 on it, then got an 800 on the real thing
