math in accounting

sorry if this has been posted before, as it probably has been, but:

how math heavy is accounting? and does it deal more with calculus or algebra?
thanks

Neither. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Knowing how to work with functions would help (so that’s technically algebra).

Accounting is more about keeping track of where things go (the difficult part) than actually calculating them (that’s the easy part).

alright thanks for the response. I’m in pre-calculus right now in high school and while I’m not horrible at it, I’m not great at it either.

Although only basic math is used in accounting work, but most of business program (yes, accounting major included) requires you to take calculus (at least a washed business calculus) in college or have the AP calculus credits as a degree requirement. So keep that in mind.

Yeah, some schools, like UT, will make you take the full blown calculus too. :(

Dude, accounting requires MAD math skillz yo. I’d recommend double majoring in math and accounting and taking as much theoretical stuff like topology and discreet math so that you can discretely hide peoples’ money in various geographical topologies!

watermark: yeah I know about having to take business calculus. I’m not trying to post this to try and get around taking calculus, I knew I’d have to eventually, just wanted to find out what it’s like. thanks
Longhorndan: wow that sucks haha
cream: not sure if serious… now that i think about it, no way you’re serious. nice try though

creamgetthamoney, I don’t know what “Topology” is. I do know that there is a mathematical area called “topography.” Did they change the use of the name?

(A = L + E) is as complicated as the math gets, at least in the intro class.

assets = liabilities + equity… i’m already learning about that this year

I’m pretty sure the math area is topology: [Topology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Topology - Wikipedia). There is a geographic science called topography, so I think you got the two backwards.

And no OP, of course I’m not serious. Do you really think mathematical topology has any relation to geographical topology except for the name lol?

you never know cream, you never know.

some programs require more than basic math classes. For UMiami, those who want the BSBA (as oppose to the more liberal arts BBA), you have to take Calc I and II, along with other statistics and economics classes. Its not engineering, but still more than the English majors take.

if you can add, subtract, multiply and divide, then you can do accounting. accounting is kinds like word problems, getting which information is important and suming up the answer. you dont need to be a math whiz, you just need to be alert on which numbers are important.

It’s maximum Algebra. AT LEAST on the undergraduate level. I bet as you go further (Masters, PhD), it becomes more and more complicated.
