Math in brown and taking risd classes

How do you like the math dept. at Brown? What does the school look for in a math major?

How easy is it for students enrolled in Brown to take design courses at RISD?

I can't answer the math stuff...but it is fairly simple to cross register for classes at RISD, I believe you can take 4 classes at RISD total in your 4 years at Brown but that may have been altered due to the recent cross-degree program.

I'm not taking any math classes this semester, but according to those I know that are- the introductory math classes are not great, but if you plan to be a math major, the upper level classes are supposed to be interesting. If you've taken the AP tests in Calc it will place you out of the first two semesters of calc and into multivariable.
It shouldn't be too hard to take classes at RISD- you just have to take an intro visual arts course here at Brown first.

Although Brown students can register for classes at RISD, be aware that it is not quite as easy as it sounds. Most RISD classes are studio classes that meet one day a week for 5 - 6 hours, which can be very difficult to fit into a typical Brown schedule. Also, nearly all RISD studios have very limited enrollment so that every student can have his/her own studio space and easy access to specialized facilities like kilns, looms, drill presses, etc.

Still, some Brown students do take classes at RISD each semester, so it can be done. Just don't count on it.

I have a daughter who is a senior at Brown. It is not easy but it is not hard either to take RISD classes. She has taken two during her time at Brown. It is true that a RISD class meets typically once per week for about five hours and so it is trickier to fit into a schedule but certainly doable. My daughter did a course one fall semester in addition to 8 practices a week for her varsity sport, plus playing on an intercollegiate club team for another sport. She took a RISD course in spring semester despite traveling out of state four days per week for her sport and being away the entire weekend and even having the RISD class on Fridays, the day her team had to leave for the weekend. Also, RISD courses start later in the semester and end later than Brown courses. It is not that hard to do at all but it simply is not as easy to do as taking a Brown course. It was worth it for my daughter as she could take things she could not do at Brown that were important for her intended career. Also, as a Brown student, RISD's resources are available. She also would do figure drawing sessions there. She also has lately been using their career services for one on one help with preparing her portfolio for graduate school. You do have to take the intro. Visual Arts class at Brown FIRST before you can do RISD classes, so you should know that.

I can't speak for the other ivies, but I personally love the mathematics department at Brown. Of course, I placed out of the first two calc courses, so I can't speak for those classes, but from what I've seen, the professors here are extremely accessible.

Brown's Math Department has something for everyone! (yay lol)

~We also have a mathematics club that invites guest lecturers to speak about their work.
~Brown's number theory is ridiculously good.
~And our applied mathematics program here is extremely extensive.
~Of course, if you want to be completely air-tight in your mathematics, Brown offers Analysis classes, and other extremely proof-intensive subjects. After your first two semesters at Brown, you'll have access to most of the tools you'll need to learn modern mathematics. If that's something that excites you, come to Brown. (You're not alone!)
