Math Internal Placement Exam and Retroactive Credit

Hi everyone, I will be attending Penn this fall as a math major and was wondering if I could take the Placement Exam when I get to campus for MATH 104 and get retroactive credit for MATH 114 by taking MATH 240. I didn’t take the AP exam for Calc BC, but I did well in the class and I’m taking Calculus II and MVC at a local state school right now over the summer. My pre-major advisor said I can’t get transfer credit for these, but I feel confident enough in my math skills and my ability to self-study material covered in MATH 114 to take MATH 240, but I was wondering if doing both the exam and getting retroactive credit was possible.

If this makes a difference, I’m a transfer student and switching from polisci/econ to math, so I really don’t want to fall behind more than I already am, as a major-switching transfer student. Thank you!

You can just take MATH 240 and get retroactive credit for both 104 and 114. You don’t have to bother taking the exam for 104. You’ll get that credit anyway by taking 240.

Yes, you can take 240 and get retroactive credit when you pass it. I think you may have to get approval from your FA. Once you pass 240, I think you have to fill out a form to get the retro credit. Don’t forget to do that! lol
