math is my downfall, need some advices

To make the story short. Never took calculus in HS and took math 1A with a man that I will never forget during freshmen year (Ai Ko Liu). In my last desperate attempt I took it pass/no pass and passed out of the class. I really didn’t want an ugly transcript my very first semester (probably an ego thing). Either way, going into my fourth year and I decided to jump right into math 1b then math 54. Oh, except I forgot a minor detail I DON’T REMEMBER ANY MATH. It has been a great 3 years at Cal but I need to face the reality and either get my first FAT C- or maybe someone has some great life-saving advices for me. I have a few options right now:

Math 1B equivalent at community college

Math 1B this summer at Cal

Math 1A then 1B (I don’t think this is a good idea)

Study on my own

Face the truth and fail

I was planning to take math 1B equivalent at a community college and not transfer my grade then take math 1B again at Cal to ensure a grade higher than C. However, it seems like I MUST report my coursework at the community college so that’s not a good idea.

On a side note, this makes me realize how much I appreciate a good professor.

u should have taken math earlier when it was fresher in ure mind. i dunno why ud take 54 3 years after u took 1a if u knew u werent as strong at it. try the CC math 1b and c how it goes. if u get ure math intuition back, go for 54 and p/np it if ure really strugglin

all you can really do is study your butt off, & know you did your best, so if you do fail, at least you know you tried.
just keep going if you do fail.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Here is the reasoning behind math 1b and 54. 54 is easier than 53 and I need math 1B and also 1 full year of calculus. So the way I see it is 54+1B is the best combination. What do you guys think about taking Math 1B during the summer? Easier? Better professor? More time? I can theoretically go right into math 1B this summer and do math 54 the upcoming semester. As long as I study like crazy I think I'd be able to catch up. What you think?

are you gonna do math 1b at a CC or cal?
if you do it at cal over summer, it'd be your only class (assuming you're only doing one class), so you can concentrate more on it, as opposed to during the fall/spring semester, when you have other classes to concentrate on too

Most likely at Cal because doing it at a cc doesn't look very good on the transcript when applying to grad school. They expect me to finish my core courses at Cal. So I guess math 1b during the summer is doable huh?

WHAAAT?!!? is this true? because i am an incoming freshman and i am planning to take 2-4 classes this summer at a CC...

Well here is the idea. Grad schools know that Berkeley courses are often times more rigorous than equivalent courses at your typical CC so they would like you to be able to show them that you can handle these courses at Cal's level. Not that you can't take courses at CCs but just know that grad schools will take that into consideration and you can't eliminate the possibility of them using that against you. With that said, it is best that you take your courses at Cal especially "core" classes that are part of the grad school requirements.

Also I just recently found out that if you do decide to take courses at a community college you must report it to the grad school. I was going to take some calculus at a CC as preparation before taking it yet again at Cal but now I don't think it's feasible.

Yup. I take all my breadth requirements in the summer at community colleges because I have no interest in them. I find it much easier to do them in 8 weeks then waste an entire semester learning things I don't care for.

Ahh dangit i don't think mine are breadth requirements; i'm signed up for us history & european civilization..

It depends on your major. But those sounds like your typical breadth courses.

yea, i think doing 1b at during summer at cal will be your best bet.

Well i am doing it to have an option in case i want to go on to law school or just double major in poli sci
