Math Level 1

Hello, I was wondering what exactly can I expect on the Sat subject test for Math level 1. Will I be able to take it after completing precalc? Is it much different from the level 2 test? and which prep book would I suggest to study from? thanks.

If you’ve taken precalculus, the almost universal advice is to take Math Level 2.

what’s the difference between ML1 and ML2?

Math Level 2 covers precalculus topics; Level 1 does not.

Math on the SAT I and the SAT II Math Level 1 are about the same thing. The timing seems a little more demanding on the Math Level 1 and it’s supposed to be a little more difficult. Personally, I did better on Math Level 1 than on Math, but maybe that’s just me. Math Level 2 has a really nice curve to it and you can get an 800 and get like 3 questions wrong, or something like that. Also, let’s use 700 as an example, a score that might be in the 80~th percentile in Math 1 would be in like the 65~th percentile for Math Level II. This does reflect the different kind of people taking the subject test, but it’s tough to say which is better. I have a friend who took Math I and now goes to Columbia and she took IB Mathematics SL in high school (calc and more) so it really, IMO, doesn’t make a difference which you take.

ok, well ill have to give it some thought to decide which one ill take. Do colleges look at the percentile (80th), or will they just take note that you got that 700, or whatever the case may be.

Percentile is most important.

in that case, wouldnt it be more beneficial to take the ML1? or is MichaelS’ statement not correct?

Percentile is not the only factor. Math Level 2 is preferred by some colleges.

^ ditto, a lot of the more competitive schools prefer MathII over MathI. A lot actually state on their websites that you need to take MathII in order to apply to a certain school within a college. But I think that usually is only for business or engineering schools.

But I think for most schools, MathI is fine. But taking precalc means you can take the MathII pretty easily. MathII test doesn’t go into any super tricky or difficult precalc problems, and you basically only need to recognize 3 basic trig identities. (like sinx^2 + cosx^2 = 1)

harvard says it doesnt matter, MIT says they dont have a preference, but stanford says it wont hurt you but they prefer math 2. I am looking to go into engineering, and i am generally pretty good at math. which would you guys suggest i take?
