Hi, all. So I’m a fairly strong math student (780 SAT Math, 750 Math Level 1, 5 on AP calc AB and AP stats), but for some reason, I didn’t fare too well on the mathematics level 2 exam that I took this June (740). I know the scaled score doesn’t look too bad, but the percentile sucks, and considering I want to enter into a fairly decent CS program, I’m thinking I need to get an 800 on this test.

My three questions are:

Is it a realistic goal for me to get an 800?

Can I do it by October?

What books should I use to prepare?

Yes

Yes

My son took one week to prepare using Barrons and Spark Notes though he just missed the 800 geting 790 instead and he's only just finished Precal. You can do it. You have a solid foundation.

If you can get a 5 on AP Calc there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get an 800. Just use Barron's (over-preparation, but you can handle it if you handle calc) and take lots of tests.

sure you can! confidence+studying=success
i am still a math level 1-er, but i get 800's on the practice tests, and i heard that on math level 2 you don't even need to do all the questions to get an 800, so it shouldn't be that hard?? and plus your AP calc score is pretty solid, you should do fine with a bit more review

@Ice: For Math2, you can get around 5-6 questions wrong and still get an 800, but the thing is that the questions are more difficult than the ones found on Math I and/or take longer, but the good thing is that since the scale is so generous, it's pretty easy to do well. I scored a 710 on Math I, and an 800 on MathII if that helps.

@Ashraf: I'd reccomend Barrons as well. Usually people say that it's a lot/somewhat harder than the actual test, and that because of that, it would prepare you for it. I took the test in June, and I think it was the general consensus that it was a bit harder than the usual ones, and that it matched up in difficulty with Barrons practice tests. I feel that Barrons over prepares you in the way that a lot of the things on the practice tests won't show up on the real thing. I scored like 700/730 on the Barrons practice test and an 800 on the real thing.

Barron's is pointless if you're a good enough math student. You're better off just doing the 3 CB tests and the 5 free sparknotes tests to prep.

I'd rec Barrons because yeah, it overprepares you! I wish someone told me that before I completely bombed their exams the week the actual test. I completely freaked out and was completely nervous on exam morning... the good thing was, the test was actually very easy, and I got more confident doing it.

I'm not a 'good' math student as I have a bad work ethic and tend to do everything in the last minute, but I still got a 800 on it. I was rather surprised... so yeah, with the prep you have, you can get that 800! Also, Sparknotes is good too. My only caveat are those CB practice tests-- those are usually way too easy.
