Have tried studying for the Math II but I am really struggling with the test. Maybe it is because I took Pre-Calculus as a sophomore and Algebra II as an 8th grader and can't remember the material?

I have already taken calculus. Is anyone else struggling with the Math II test? Does it look bad to take the Math I?

Would really appreciate any sort of advice.

If you’re having trouble with the material, it might be worth it to buy a prep book to review. If you’re struggling to not make stupid mistakes, the math 1 curve is tougher (you can’t get a few questions wrong and still walk away with an 800 like in math 2), so taking math 1 probably won’t help you.

Not a good sign if you are having trouble with Math Level II after taking calculus. Math Level II stuff should be second nature, and easily re-learned. If you are going to struggle with Math at MIT, you will be struggling with a lot of classes.

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. Math 2 is, like, trigonometry. I haven’t taken any classes that use trigonometry except chemistry, which is hard for other reasons.

For MIT, especially, I would recommend Math II, since it is a heavily math-oriented school. As I understand it, all undergrads must take math through multivariate. Math II contains no calculus. I would suggest looking at a prep book to sort of refresh the material in your mind.

Stick with Math II. Math Level 1 is stuff that you probably learned even longer ago. Personally, I think you should have taken Math level 2 right after precalc but it is too late to change the past. Get the barron’s prep book and use that to study.

Thanks everyone. Have been studying crash course. Maybe I’ll try another book.

It doesn’t matter to MIT whether you take math level 1 or level 2, so you should take the test for which you are best-prepared and on which you think you will achieve the best score. Many people choose to take math level 2 because the curve is somewhat more generous, but if you feel you’re better-prepared for level 1, there is absolutely no penalty on MIT’s part for taking level 1.

The content of your math courses should determine whether you take the Level 1 or the Level 2 Math test and when b**./quote

I would argue that there’s a big difference between deciding which SAT II to take and deciding whether MIT math will be too difficult, and I would caution other posters to cross that bridge when we (collectively) come to it.
